Eight artists were short-listed to prepare maquettes for the Ian Potter Foundation Prize. It was the wish of the then gallery director Patrick McCaughey to install a large sculpture in the St Kilda Road moat of the National Gallery of Victoria. Messenger was selected and installed in 1983 and remained in that location until November 2003, when it wes relocated to the moat in the Sculpture Garden, National Gallery of Victoria International.
